Thanks for the propose Farming Engineer. I got habitation this evening and got washed working on my tractor brakes I cranked it upward and drove it to check on my adjustment, and oddly enough the battery light was off. I idea maybe bulb had burnt out but it hadnt, it comes on when you cutting the switch on. Didnt really accept time to check voltage this evening, but Ill keep an middle on information technology and if it does it again Sick employ your info to help me trace the problem. Im pretty good with mechanics, not so much with electrical stuff so your advise was very much appreciated.

Just a few thoughts. It is possible that the regulator failure was caused by a problem with the wiring or the alternator itself. We are often quick to blame a failed part direct without determining the cause of the failure. First I would check all the connections at the alternator and regulator as well as at the bombardment to be sure they are make clean and tight. A voltage drib across whatever connection in the charging system tin cause charging problems. Be especially careful to wait over the grounds since these are ofttimes overlooked. A voltage drop exam tin can exist very helpful to locate a bad connexion. Next you tin check the continuity of the field circuit in the alternator by checking the resistance from the field terminal on the alternator to ground (with the field wire disconnected). There should exist some non zero resistance but information technology should exist small, like 4 to 12 ohms. The service transmission might take exact numbers. If the resistance is very large or infinite, the about likely culprit is bad brushes. If the resistance is zero or nearly zero, the field circuit has a curt. Next you tin can check if the field is getting voltage from the regulator. Plug the regulator back in and reconnect the wires to the alternator. Turn the ignition on but don't start the tractor. You should take some voltage at the field concluding of the alternator. If these checks pass you might see if you accept a local parts store that will do gratuitous alternator testing as there might exist another problem similar a bad diode or diodes in the rectifier or fifty-fifty just a broken solder joint or wire inside the alternator.

Hope this helps. All-time of luck.

Don

Well my voltage regulator quit on me Thursday while sowing the grass seed in my little pasture. The battery light came on, and then when I got done I checked voltage at battery with engine running it was only 12.two volts. I ordered a regulator, and I put it on and I cranked it upward and took information technology upwards the road a ways the battery light stayed on. I checked voltage again and at idle speed its not putting out hardly anything, just from 1600 rpms on up its putting out thirteen.five or more than volts. At 800 rpms its nearly 12.6. Whats going on here?

Hold... leave it till it fails... tin discover a new one for every bit cheap equally $36 on either ebay or amazon but this one shows to nonetheless be working. The one I ordered last week actually came with a adjustment on the dorsum, a piffling potentiometer, so you can actually gear up the charge voltage upward or downwardly a bit.,, simply the pot could later be a source of failure as its exposed in back to moisture.

Sounds similar it is nonetheless working fine (except for a little incontinence), so if mine, I would leave it alone, just continue centre on things.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to run intoWell Im out of work today got an center Drs appointment, so I went out and started the tractor which starts slap-up by the style and unhooked my scrape blade. Hooked up an erstwhile drag and fabricated a few laps around my lilliputian pasture, probably 30 minutes got the engine warm and checked voltage. With the engine running anywhere from 800-1800 rpms voltage at battery was 13.57. Last night I checked bombardment voltage while stone cold it was 12.vi, so I dont call up its battery. I as well checked to see if regulator got warm and it stayed cold so Im leaning towards bad regulator. Belts not slipping either. Ill probably exist running information technology a little in the next day or ii, what else could I cheque? Would putting a load on it similar turning the lights on tell me anything?

plain you are "letting the fume out of it"..
something is probably getting very hot... bad vr? bad jail cell in bombardment? bad alternator? or combination of the higher up.

go a voltage meter and start testing... what is bombardment voltage when turned off for a long period??? should be 12.6 or shut.

What is voltage when running?? should slowly build upwards to xiv.2 afterward a bit awaiting on the battery status... if battery is proficient, would charge up quicker. If it does not increase any in voltage, charging system is bad... if it increases some simply never gets in a higher place 13.six... could exist charging system or battery bad.

Afterwards battery is charged up, shut it down and after a couple of minutes cheque bombardment voltage,,, should slowly drop to 12.six... if it drops more than, battery is bad..
If battery charges upwards but has problem cranking,,, sulfated battery or bad starting system.

I have never seen 1 of those exercise that, and then I would be concerned, at a minimum that it'due south potentially not charging. Check it for proper operation by putting a voltmeter across the battery later on the engine has been running for a while. It should be 13.8 - 14.five volts or so. If it'due south more than or less than that, your regulator is faulty.

By the mode, the black stuff you see is a melted epoxy that encapsulates all of the electronic gizmos within of it.
